Project Management, since its first uses in the aerospace and defence departments of the U.S. has become increasingly important in all areas, including social and financial areas.
In Spain, it started with a strong focus on industrial projects, quickly expanding to other construction areas. Its fast development is greatly motivated by the increasing needs to optimize resources in order to achieve the desired objectives. The implementation of Project Management in the construction business is a direct consequence of this.
In order to completely understand the meaning of Project Management it is important to understand thoroughly the meaning of both words.
Project is the combination of human and non-human resources, combined in a temporary organization in order to achieve a set purpose.
Management is the skill of coordinating and optimizing the use of all available resources, specially human resources, using leadership and the adequate tools, skills and methods.
In consequence, Project Management means organizing human and material resources during the lifespan of a given project, using the appropriate skills in order to achieve the set cost, time, location and quality minimums and restraints, satisfying all the parts that take part in the project.
